We welcome you to lovely Long Grove, Illinois. This historic village dates back to the early 1800s. The village was founded by German farmers who were reminded of their Saar Valley homeland. Our open-air "lifestyle" center is as it was long ago but the shopping district still meets the needs of families on the go. The name Long Grove is taken from the large grove of oak and hickory trees which once extended southwest from Gilmer Road and Route 83, along Buffalo and other creeks and through the area of Old Route 53 and Robert Parker Coffin Road and beyond, including the Deer Grove Forest Preserve. The Village of Long Grove is unique among suburban communities--an oasis that the rapid advance of urban sprawl has not penetrated and where residents can enjoy a relaxed and rural lifestyle. This is what has attracted its residents, and it is the official policy of the Village to preserve that character through strict? zoning. Though relatively small in terms of population (it has grown to 6,735 according to the latest census), the Village is quite large in land mass, covering about 18 square miles. This translates into many acres of open space. Zoning ensures that residential properties are ample, thereby the open space of the community is retained and the privacy that residents cherish is protected. In addition, the retention of natural vegetation on both public and private property is zealously protected by Village ordinances.
Long Grove may be best known for its specialty shops and special dining. Visitors travel long distances by car and chartered bus to spend a day in our Historic Business District. Downtown Long Grove contains some 120 businesses. With few exceptions, all are open seven days a week, all year long. The success of our turn-of-the-century shopping environment is not just luck. After World War II, when the Village as we know it today began taking shape, a need to preserve the historic value and flavor of the district was recognized. As a result, the first historic district in Illinois was created in 1960 by Village ordinance.
To protect the character of our business district, stringent regulations control signs, building size and use, and even paint color. The Architectural Board, composed of local residents who volunteer their time and expertise, administers Village codes. Their efforts, coupled with sensible planning and carefully styled merchandising, have produced in our midst a unique retail business community which, in turn, helps to ensure the financial stability of the Village.mplete
